Podcast - Record Rewind

Planning Stage

This podcast idea first stemed from a module in my college course called ‘Personal Development Project’, this module as it says in the name is to develop your understanding and prepare me for the music industry, we were asked to create an EP, Host a live event, Make a podcast and many other ideas but I had chosen to create a music based podcast with some other people in my college course. The first part of the planning would be to create a Work Breakdown Structure and a Gantt chart so that we could effectivly be prepared for this and not forget any steps to it and can be efficent in moving onto the next challenge in it quickly.

SWOT Analysis

Me and the other people making this podcast had desided to created a SWOT Analysis of our podcast so we will know the ups and downs of creating a podcast.

Strengths

  • Non-saturated market.

  • Video podcast, video podcasts have been proven to bring in more engagement.

  • Up to date news/topics in the music spaces.

  • Give a spotlight to upcoming artists.

Weaknesses

  • Time and Resource Commitment.

  • Recording, editing, and producing podcast episodes requires significant time and effort.

  • Staying updated with the latest music releases and trends can be time-consuming.

  • Investing in quality audio equipment and software is essential for professional-sounding podcasts.

Opportunities

  • Building a community/following that will interact with our brand.

  • Networking with likeminded individuals and help build our brand with these connections. Opportunities for sponsorships open up, gives us more opportunities to generate profit.

  • Using social media to reach a larger audience that could be interested in the podcast.

Threats

  • Due to the length of podcasts, we may encounter issues with retaining some listeners as they may prefer shortform content.

  • If our episodes are considered boring by viewers, we risk losing listeners, meaning we must keep it entertaining.

  • We must avoid falling into a niche that will stop us from reaching different demographics, meaning that we should discuss all genres of music and news/announcements that will be found interesting by many listeners.

Case Study

I desided to find other podcasts that will be like my groups podcast so i had created a case study from another podcast in the music industry below:

Working class audio is a podcast that was created in 2014 by Matt Boudreau where there is a wide range of people such as studio engineers or someone that does something unique in the industry like vinyl mastering for a living which is in one of his episodes.

The platforms that this podcast is on is Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube & Amazon Music.

The average episode length is around 1 hour long with an average of 70 views on YouTube, but I think it will have way more on other platforms.

There is 514 episodes to date (25/10/24) on Spotify.

They have Experimented with using some short form content such as YouTube shorts to show off the podcast to those that don’t watch long form content to much and are watching that instead.

Project Risk Assesment

The following risks are based off the SWOT analysis and case study on another podcast:

Reocrding Stage

The first task we had to do before we even gotten into the recording studio to get the project recorded was to pick a date that suits everyone that’s involved in the recording process so we went back an forth on our availabilities and chosen a date which was the 14th November so from this point it was full steam ahead to get the talking points in place for the episode and see if we would like to get sponsors for the podcast but during the messages talking about topics to talk about we decided to not go with a sponsor and make the podcast solely so that we get get our foots in the podcast space and learn from our mistakes.

On the recording day the first thing to do on the list was to gather all the equipment from the tech base and take it all into the studio so i had brought my own SM7B and we had booked another 2 Shure SM7B’s and a Electro-Voice RE20 as a spare microphone in case something went wrong with any of the other microphones. Once all the equipment was in the studio we went setup and choose the layout of what the podcast would be and had placed 3 small lights against the wall at the back for some ambience and 2 square tables placed together.

I was the one to setup my camera which was a Sony ZV-1 for the video side of the podcast and I had put a camera microphone on it so that I could make a spike in the audio by clapping to make the editing process easier in syncing the audio files. I also had my phones as a side angle but once we got to the editing stage we decided to not use it but it was good to have more than you need in case of a SD card or file corrupting from the time of recording to editing.

From this point we recorded the episode and after it we were pound of it and believe that it was good and others would like what we had created. We took down all the equipment and packed it all away to either the tech base or if we had personally brought it for the podcast recording. The next step of the day was to the stop the recording in pro tools and save it onto everybody’s drive so that we had backups in case anything wrong happened to it from that point onwards.

Edit & Publish

We then went to go edit the podcast and had to how it would be edited from being cut up making short segments making it flow through fast and even though it was long form content making it short to be there for a wider audience or if we should keep it long form and get into the git of the details which was what we ended up deciding on picking to do. once we knew the style we needed to do so we went right into editing it the next day we were all in at college so we could edit it together and make the editing go faster because we are all giving input quickly on it but a problem that occurred from that day was that we finished the edit but the Premier Pro project was being edited from an external drive which meant that we would have a long exporting time which of editing we didn’t notice until we exported and the time it took was longer than the college day at 4 hours to do it, this was a lesson tat we have learned to not do again in future episodes and to work directly from the computer so we moved the project onto the pc which took one of the college days to do because we had a lot of footage attached so once we finally for it on a college pc and exported it was a total of three days of that module in college so the release was pushed a total of three weeks so we now know how to be more efficient for next time.

After it was edited we searched for some A.I. short form video maker which we did find and was amazing, we just uploaded the video and then it showed a lot of clips which we then downloaded with captions to make it more engaging to viewers. these short videos were posted in a staggered release so that we were not posting all at once to annoy watchers so slowed it down and posted the release date of the podcast on the podcasts social media pages.

I then created a Spotify Podcast and YouTube account to upload at set the release date which was 7th December 2024. Once it was uploaded we then advertised on social media that the episode was out was we started gaining viewers from that point on and getting engagement on Instagram a lot.
