Spatial Recording - GTA V

Planning Stage

I will need to pick a GTA V clip then plan what sounds I will need to record a sound for using the mics in slides above.

Once I have made a list of the sounds to record I will then I will record the sounds and play them back so I know if they are suitable for the clip.

I will splice the sounds on a pro tools session so I can easily place them where they are needed in the DAW then set levels

I will need to put a binaural decoder on all the tracks I use apart from the recordings where I used a binaural microphones.

The sounds will always be moving because the character in it is walking and looking around so I will be required to use automation.

Recording Process

The microphones which i will use to record will be:

Binaural microphone:

3Dio Free Space Binaural Microphone

Ambisonic microphone:

Zoom H3-VR Virtual Reality Audio Recorder

Spot microphone:

Rode NTG-2

The list of sounds which I recorded or downloaded are:

  • Birds Chirping

  • City cars

  • Clothing moving

  • Footsteps

  • Pool splashing

  • Bush & Tree sounds

How each sound was created:

The sounds of the birds chirping was downloaded from a free sound library and played throughout the whole clip.

The City cars were created by placing an ambisonic microphone on a metal railing along a long stretch of road.

The clothing sound was made by using a binauralised microphone and by rubbing a piece of clothing against the person in the room.

Footsteps in this project were made with a spot mic which was the Rode NTG-2 of hitting a shoe on the floor and some concrete slabs that there is for making foley.

The sounds of the pool splashing was created by using a Ambisonic microphone and walking along with the clip to create a realistic feel to it.

The bush and tree sounds were recording with a box of old reel tape on a spot microphone so that we can have a lot of control over the editing process and plan to pitch the sounds up and down.

Editing Stage

Bird Chirping

I wanted to make it seem like it was coming from the top of the hill instead of blended in with the car sounds, so I had used the dear vr plugin to automate it to face the top area of the hills.

Footsteps

The footsteps didn’t need dear vr on it because I had used a binaural microphone on it so I had put an eq on the track so that it will fit in this clip.

Bush & tree

The bush sound which we record was the same sound as the tree, so the plan was to Pitch the bush down because a bush has a darker sound than a tree, so the tree was pitched up.

City Cars

A group of us in the college had gone out to the street to record some sounds of cars passing a microphone so I had used that to create some more space in this clip because it can seem like its coming from the city which is far away.
